Upon completion of the Volunteer Application one of the Volunteer Coordinators will contact you. If you have questions about Volunteering in San Diego County please contact us at information@coastalgsrsd.org. Read below about the different ways in which you can volunteer.

Are you someone who loves German Shepherd Dogs? Maybe you already have a dog of your own. Or maybe this is not the time in your life to take on the life long responsibility of caring for a dog. We want to tell you of the many opportunities we have available for you to make a difference in the lives of the dogs in the Rescue family. It is fun and rewarding to be a volunteer because you’ll give a rescued dog a second lease on life while waiting for a new forever home. Coastal GSRSD was even recently voted in the top 5 best places to volunteer in San Diego County (2011 Union-Tribune Best of San Diego Poll) and was the highest-ranked animal welfare volunteer organization.

We have an awesome team of volunteers who are committed and dedicated to ensure that every life we save is given 100% love and care. Dogs that come under our care may be abused or neglected. Some are relinquished by homes that can no longer care for them. Others are sick and malnourished. If you would like to join our team and dish out some doggie lovin’, please read on.

downloadEvery Friday afternoon, we have the opportunity to bring three to five of our dogs to swim hydrotherapy at The Total Dog in Oceanside. Maybe a dog needs to lose weight or maybe swimming is therapeutic because of a physical condition or maybe a dog just needs to spend an afternoon away from the kennel. The German Shepherd Dog may not be a natural swimmer but with time and practice, they learn and enjoy it. Of course, they are very intelligent so usually it just takes one session and they take to the water like a fish! Pictured at right, many wet doggy kisses is the reward for a fun day in the swim spa!

We are always looking for dedicated volunteers. If you are ready to get started, please complete our online application (under the Applications menu at the top of this page). Or you can stop by one of our adoption events and meet with one of our volunteer coordinators in person. We need you and the dogs will be forever grateful!

VolunteerAdoptionAlmost every Saturday we have an adoption event and we need volunteers to help set up for the event and to walk the dogs. If you are at least eighteen years of age, physically able to handle large and enthusiastic dogs, reliable and motivated to help our precious dogs while they wait for their foster or forever homes, we need you! We will teach you everything you need to know!
From time to time we also do special events. So if you’re not able to volunteer on Saturdays, or if you live too far from the San Marcos area, add your name to our mailing list and keep an eye on the events calendar. We may be coming to your neighborhood soon!

Dog walkers help our dogs stay physically and mentally healthy by giving them lots of exercise and helping them to become properly socialized. Many of our dogs are in boarding facilities in San Marcos. If you have time during the week, we’d love to have you! Maybe you are available only on the weekend and cannot walk dogs during the week. Consider joining us at our weekly adoption events. Read more above.
If you do not want to walk dogs, we also need dog companions who will just hang out with our dogs at one of our boarding facilities. Bring a book and just settle down for some quiet time with one of our sweet dogs. Just petting a dog or grooming a dog is great fun for both of you.

Rescue is funded solely by adoption fees, private donations and fundraising activities. When we participate in a community event or if we organize and hold our own event, we need you! The activities are many. Are you a natural salesperson? You can sell tickets, distribute flyers, solicit raffle items, staff a special event, or help to organize an event.

Our dogs love to go for long walks but it’s very long walk from the boarding kennels to our adoption events or to a community event. That’s why we need volunteers who can transport dogs in their personal vehicles. If you like to drive and would like a handsome German Shepherd Dog or two as a traveling companion, you are invited to our transport team.
