Benson isn’t a big boy.  He can almost qualify for what we endearingly call a pocket shepherd, almost.  Don’t let his small stature fool you though.  He knows he’s a German Shepherd through and through.  He is loyal to his family.  That is what made it so hard for him this year when he lost them because they could no longer afford him.  He doesn’t understand how he went from a home where he had lived for all of his life to being lost in a strange place, with strange people, surrounded by so many dogs in the shelter.

Unlike other dogs who have been found as strays, with Benson, we are fortunate enough to have a little history on him.  We know he loves more than anything to be with his people.  He has been known to have a little separation anxiety; so he would need a family that can help him with that, one where he isn’t left alone for long periods.  He knows some of his commands, sit, down, and even paw.  He loves to chase any rope that you drag along the ground for him.   Since Benson has been with Coastal at the Ranch, he has bonded with some of the volunteers, and he is quick to let them know that he knows they are there.  Even from a distance, he sounds off with his bark to let them know he sees them.  He is underweight right now, but we are making sure he gets extra meals.  The stress of kennel life doesn’t help Benson, especially when he is too stressed to eat.  We know that being in a stable home is exactly what he needs.  Benson is five years old now.  This was his first Christmas without a family.  We are hoping that he can find a family soon.
