Since time began, it has been said that there is no greater love than the love of a mother, no sense of responsibility greater than that of a mother, and no force to be reckoned with greater than a mother trying to protect her young. Ahri and Ahrielle’s story is a story of such love. Lost and alone in the shelter, Ahri shared her kennel run with another dog. While waiting for her turn to be spayed, something happened. Ahri began giving birth. She was so thin that no one even knew she was pregnant. Why she wasn’t moved we will never know, but she wasn’t. The next time someone checked on her, she was bloody and battered, trying to keep her puppies safe. She and her surviving puppy were taken to a safe place. Ahri got the medical attention she needed, and we got the call, did we have room for a very sweet mom with one little puppy.
We met Ahri at the shelter as she walked by the staff person who carried little Ahrielle. Ahri never took her eyes off of her baby, but she greeted us with a little wag of her tail. She was welcomed into a foster home and given a room of her own where she could care for her baby without having to worry about anything else. While Ahri was busy taking care of her baby, her foster mom was busy taking care of her. She quickly realized that Ahri is one of the sweetest dogs she has ever met and one of the most appreciative dogs, not only for the attention she was getting but the attention she saw her baby getting too.
As time passed and Ahrielle grew and became more independent, Ahri welcomed new members in to meet her little one. She accepted everyone as her friend. As time passed, something else changed. Ahri didn’t see Ahrielle as her little baby that she needed to push out into the world to spread her wings. She began seeing her as her best friend and her student. She has switched roles from mother to mentor, and Ahrielle has become her best friend. Fortunately for Ahri, she will never have to worry about being in the shelter again. She will never have to worry about giving birth alone again or even giving birth. The last puppy she had, the one she fought to protect and keep alive, has become her best friend. We are looking for a home where they can spend the rest of their lives together, where Ahri can continue to be the mentor that she has become, a home where Ahrielle can grow from bouncing puppy into sweet adult dog, just like her mom.
