Addison is a wonderful little girl, kind of what we like to endearingly call a “Pocket Shepherd.” While she couldn’t literally fit into your pocket, it doesn’t stop her from trying to get as close to you as she can for her “Addie hug.” Addison is one of our special needs dogs. She has a condition called Mega Esophagus. It is a condition that she was born with. The good thing for Addison is she can live a long, happy life with this condition, as long as there is management. What does management look like? Addison eats in her Bailey Chair. When she was a puppy she wasn’t too enthralled, but when she learned what the chair means, as soon as she sees her food, she runs to her chair, opens the door, gets in, puts her paws on the back while she waits for you to close the door, then turns and patiently, but excitedly, awaits her food. Then she sits in her chair for her 20 minutes to give her meal time to go down the hatch. She doesn’t eat treats like dogs without her condition, but she can have some treats that melt in her mouth. Her biggest issue is monitoring her water intake. She can drink water like a normal dog in smaller amounts. Addison loves to do what we call “tanking up”, which she can’t do. There are many websites with information on mega esophagus on the Internet now, and we would encourage you to familiarize yourself with the condition and challenges that may come with the condition, keeping in mind that the challenges and the severity are different for every dog.
Who is Addison as a dog? Well, she is wonderful. She loves people, has never met anyone that she doesn’t like. If you don’t like doggie hugs, she is not the one for you. She loves other dogs. She is patient with the fearful and she has learned that “the eye” that she can give to those who don’t know how to properly behave can put them in their place very quickly. While she may be small, she is one of those walk softly, carry a big bone kind of girls. She can run and play with the most excited dog or she can relax with those whose days of running with abandonment are long past. She is not a beta. She is an alpha, but what we like to call a “balanced alpha”. She is a leader. While she can run and play, she also knows when she needs to stop. She is not one for the avid jogger or runner, but she loves her walks. No children, please. While she does love everyone she has met, she has never been around children. She is crate trained but prefers to sleep on a comfy bed at night now.
